The European Commission has approved the inclusion of olive oil produced in this area with a denomination of origin protection (DOP), and will be added to the geographical indication protected product list (IGP).
The DOP protection protects products that shows qualities tied to their geographical location. The zone of the DOP for the area includes the following villages and towns: - Alcover, Alfara de Carles, l'Ametlla de Mar, Bot, Benifallet, Camarles, Deltebre, Paüls, the Perelló, Roquetes, Tivenys, Tortosa and Xerta, in the region of the Baix Ebre; and that of the Montsià els d'Alcanar, Amposta, Freginals, La Galera, Godall, Mas de Barberans, Masdenverge, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Sant Jaume D'enveja, Santa Bàrbara, the Sénia, and Ulldecona.
The accepted varieties of olives are Morruda and Sevillenca. The prominent variety being Morruda, making up over half of the trees in the area. This variety produces oil from a green/yellow thorough to a gilt yellow, with a flavoursome and fruity flavour at the beginning of the season and a slighty sweet taste later on in the season.
